Chapter BD42 on papyri during the New Kingdom, Late and Ptolemaic Period

Abstract

Chapter 42 of the Book of the Dead is one of the important chapters in the Book of the Dead. The chapter 42BD evolved from the spell 539 of the Pyramids texts. The vignettes of the chapter 42 of the Book of the Dead consist of a number of vignettes that have changed from time to time and these vignettes correspond to the text of the spell. The appearance of chapter 42 of the Book of the Dead was rare in the Old Kingdom, then it began to flourish in the period of the New Kingdom until its importance decreased in the third intermediate period until it began to flourish again in the Late Period, and by the Ptolemaic period, new features have been added to the chapter vignettes, chapter 42 of the Book of the Dead reached the peak of its prosperity and then disappeared in the Roman period.
The vignettes of the chapter had their symbolism and religious connotations that illustrate the image that the ancient Egyptian imagined in preserving his body parts, the gods that help him, the places he goes to, and his attempt to avoid the slaughter.
The study of the chapter BD42 , which was recorded on papyri, in tombs, in the texts of the pyramids, on coffins, temples, and the shrouds of mummies is very important, as the main idea of the text for chapter 42BD is to unite the different organs of the deceased with the different gods to ensure his immortality.
